A Message from the Chief of the Department

About 80 percent of fire departments in the United States are Volunteer, with an estimated 785,000 volunteers. The volunteer fire service has been operating since the early 1700’s, with the exception of technological advancements, the idealistic operations of the volunteer fire department have remained the same. Community members train to be fire fighters, participate in drills and events together, and answer their neighbors call for help, the same as the volunteers did nearly 300 years ago.

The Middle Island Fire Department responds to about 1800 calls each year, almost all of which are medical incidents, motor vehicle accidents, rescues and fires. These “ordinary” everyday calls never make headlines. But I want you to know that your efforts on these unheralded incidents are no less important to our citizens than the more celebrated ones. Every emergency medical technician who responds to a sick patient, every firefighter who protects a family’s home by putting out a chimney fire, and every fire police officer that protects our fire fighters while operating in hazardous areas don’t go unrecognized and is a hero to someone. On behalf of the Middle Island Fire Department, I offer a sincere “thank you” to every member of this department for the time and dedication that goes into being a volunteer.
The 2014 Chiefs office is dedicated to the members of this department, with the support and aid of First Assistant Chief William Nevin and Second Assistant Chief Kenneth Donnelly, I have been given the tools to continue to lead this department in a great direction. I would like to thank the Officers, Members, and Board of Fire Commissioners for their unwavering support and dedication to our department.

I would like to thank all of the Fire District Employees for the outstanding services they provide our Department. With a very special thank you to the Chiefs’ Secretary Debra Tunjian and the Fire District Manager Christopher Campo, These two people go above and beyond their “job” and by doing so allow me to complete my duties as chief more effectively and efficiently.

One of the hardest challenges I have had during my term in the Chief’s office has been how to balance my family life with the many hours of time I have had to dedicate to administrative duties at the fire department. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my wife Jennifer for her support during my term in the chief’s office, without her I would not have been able to carry out my duties as chief. She has cared for our daughter Callyn during the many hours each week I have had to be at the fire house. I would also like to thank my Mother Joan, Aunt Diane, and Cousin Amanda for their support, at the drop of a hat they have also been there to watch our daughter while I attended to the department. Without the support and understanding of our families, our department would not function. I would like to extend much appreciation and thankfulness to all of our family members. So many of us have missed our home cooked meals or countless times we have been late to family events Thank you to all of the moms, dads, brothers, sisters, wives, husbands, sons, and daughters.
