The Middle Island Volunteer Fire Department has been responding to the emergency calls in our community since 1948, which is 66 years of dedicated service. Since 1980, the population of Middle Island has increased by more than 5,000 residents. This population increase has now pushed our call volume to a new high. Currently the volunteers are answering approximately 1800 emergency calls per year. Emergency calls are just one of the time consuming integral parts of a volunteer’s job, the other is training. In 2013, the members took part in over 20,000 hours of training. These many hours of training by our dedicated members has greatly contributed to the “above average” ISO rating of 3:9 that our Fire District currently holds. This ISO rating directly impacts your homeowners insurance and helps keep your rates at a minimum. The Middle Island Fire Department also provides many other non-emergency services to our community. Some of these include but are not limited to: The annual fire prevention and open house, the annual fire prevention training at all Longwood schools located in Middle Island, the annual Longwood Junior High School career day, the annual holiday parade in December and the Veterans and Memorial Day celebrations at Bartlett Pond Park. We also host the charter for Boy Scout troop 433, Cub Scout troop 625, the Fire Explorer Post 9515, the Middle Island Seniors and currently the Middle Island Civics. On average the department awards $5-$8,000 in scholarships to graduating high school students in our community as well.

The volunteers of Middle Island have been operating out of a building which was originally constructed in 1953 and then added onto in 1960 and again in 1975. A few of the major issues that are currently affecting our operations are: the heating and air conditioning systems are constantly failing, major roof leaks on all roofs, exterior siding, window and door problems, outdated elevator, electrical issues and plumbing issues above and below concrete slabs. We are not ADA compliant. We do not have the appropriate space to operate safely within the garage areas and do not meet NFPA standards for gear storage.

History has proven that local fire departments are the first line of defense during a disaster. Our community cannot safely be protected during a large scale emergency if the fire department equipped to protect them is not able to operate at its best. The Middle Island Fire Department is your most important source of emergency responders when you call 911. The current building is not capable of providing these services in its current condition.

Approximately 12 years ago and then again 8 years ago we were unsuccessful in getting the support of our community to replace the current facility. After extensive review of all our options, we have determined that renovation of the current facility is not a reasonable or financially prudent option. The current facility is not capable of handling the call volume, the training requirements and is not equipped to safely host community groups and social events. The newly proposed building will not only fulfill all of these needs but is designed to fit in well with this residential community.

We have listened to the community and have taken action in order to address issues and complaints that were relative to the past proposed projects. The current Board of Fire Commissioners has reduced the Fire Districts budget by 15% over the past 4 years; bring the budget back to approximately the same as in 2007. The size of the building we are proposing is based on our current facility square footage plus some extra storage, training and garage space. We have been actively participating in local community groups to make sure everyone is aware of our plan; including the Middle Island Civic Association, Middle Island Seniors, PTAs, Birchwood HOA, etc.

There is a Public Hearing / Public Meeting scheduled for July 29th at 7:00pm. At this meeting we will discuss the proposed plan and will be prepared to answer any questions you may have. Please speak with your neighbors and urge them to attend with you. This is our community and all residents should be involved in this discussion for this important endeavor to continue to provide you with the level of service we know you deserve.

Thank you for taking the time to support your local heroes !
